Discovering a gift

Meet Majid Al Usaimi, the first UNICEF ambassador from the United Arab Emirates, and discover how his passion and perseverance has led him to become a UAE aluminium innovator.

Majid Al Usaimi

When Majid Al Usaimi was only two years old, he contracted polio. The life-threatening disease left him reliant on a wheelchair to get around. But even as a child, he did not let his difficulties hold him back.

Majid went on to study in Dubai and graduated from university with honours. Since then, he has dedicated his life to working closely with people of determination, encouraging healthy lifestyles through sports and challenging societal views of disability.

“My story started from childhood, I believed that I could achieve success and reach far. Despite the challenges, I was able to overcome them and succeed in several areas, most important of which is being an active member of society and creating positive change.”

Together, innovating aluminium
to make modern life possible

Aluminium is among the world’s most versatile metals, and our global customers transform it into products that make modern life possible – from smartphones and building materials to food packaging and car parts.

Aluminium is a major contributor to cutting-edge technology leading paralympic sports. Aluminium is the metal of choice for wheelchair rugby chairs, as the metal is able to withstand impacts and crashes.

“As the president of the Asian Paralympic Committee and a former athlete myself, aluminium is of great importance in the lives of people of determination because it is used in most Paralympic sports equipment.

“Due to its lightweight and strength, it is used in wheelchairs for racing, tennis and basketball amongst other sports.”
