Our research and technology development focuses on reducing the amount of energy required to produce each tonne of aluminium, curbing both costs and emissions. We also employ technologies to treat and control emissions.

In the United Arab Emirates, emissions are regulated by government. We monitor emissions and discharges from all of our facilities in the UAE to ensure that our associated controls are operating efficiently and that we are not resulting in any significant impacts.
We have reduced the total greenhouse gas emissions produced per tonne of aluminium by 10% since 2011.
Emirates Global Aluminum’s total greenhouse gas emissions, including power generation and desalination, are now less than 8 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of aluminium. This is the performance standard set by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative for existing smelters to meet by 2030.
EGA’s emissions of perfluorocarbons, one group of greenhouse gases generated in the aluminium smelting process, were 22 kilograms per tonne of aluminium produced in 2017 compared to a global average of 380 kilograms per tonne in 2016, the most recent year for which figures are available from the International Aluminium Institute. These are among the lowest PFC emissions in the global industry, but there is always more to be done.
EGA is a member of the International Aluminium Institute and supports the Institute’s voluntary target of a 93% reduction in perfluorocarbon emissions by 2020 (using 1990 as the baseline). EGA Jebel Ali achieved this reduction by 2015 - five years early.
Our Al Taweelah smelter’s fluoride emissions intensity was 0.19 kilogrammes of fluoride per tonne of aluminium produced in 2017. This is less than one-third of the global industry average.
We also focus on reducing our NOx emissions, which affect air quality and are produced mainly by our power plants. NOx is also produced by motor vehicles.
In November 2016, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the UAE Government Accelerators programme, which involves collaboration between the public and private sectors to make rapid progress in achieving Government priorities for society over 100-day period.
The Ministry of Climate Change & Environment selected EGA to participate in one of the first five UAE Government Accelerators projects, to reduce NOx emissions from our power plants by 10 per cent in just 100 days.
By the end of the 100-day period in late February 2017, we had reduced the NOx emissions by 16%, based on annual running hours, exceeding the target. This is the equivalent of removing 450,000 cars from the UAE’s roads.
