Our smelter at Jebel Ali was the first to be built in the United Arab Emirates and only the second in the Gulf. When construction began back in 1976, it was one of the biggest industrial development projects in the region.
Emirates Global Aluminium’s Jebel Ali site is located near Jebel Ali port to the south of the historic centre of Dubai.
The city of Dubai has expanded around and beyond our site over the years.
Aluminium production at Jebel Ali began in 1979 with three small potlines and a nameplate production capacity of 135,000 tonnes per year.
After eight separate expansions over the years, today our Jebel Ali smelter has seven potlines and a nameplate production capacity of over 1 million tonnes of aluminium per year.
There are now 1,577 reduction cells at Jebel Ali, producing high quality aluminium. All our pots at Jebel Ali were either built with EGA technology originally or have been upgraded with EGA technology since construction.
In 2017, Jebel Ali passed 20 million tonnes of aluminium production since start-up in the 1970s.
Some pots at Jebel Ali are dedicated to the production of aluminium with a purity of 99.96 per cent, which is exceptionally high and can be used in specialist aviation and electronics applications.
After smelting, metal is transferred to the casthouse to be made into products.
We have 12 casting stations at Jebel Ali to make the products that our customers need.
Our Jebel Ali site has its own power plant to meet our electricity needs.
EGA’s Jebel Ali power plant has 23 gas turbines and seven steam turbines with a total generating capacity of 2,350 megawatts.
Our Jebel Ali site also has a desalination plant with a capacity of 30 million gallons (136,000 cubic metres) of water per day, meeting both our own water needs and supplying external water customers.
EGA has two dedicated berths for the import of raw materials at Jebel Ali Port by ship.
We also have storage facilities for 310,000 tonnes of alumina, 50,000 tonnes of calcined petroleum coke and 30,000 tonnes of liquid pitch.
Aluminium fluoride is delivered by road and ship.
We manufacture carbon anodes on site at Jebel Ali for use in our smelter, and also bring some anodes from our carbon plant at Al Taweelah.
Anodes are large blocks of carbon which are suspended from anode rods in the electrolytic solution and conduct electricity through the cells during the smelting process.
Our Jebel Ali carbon plant has the capacity to produce more than 380,000 anode blocks a year.
EGA’s Jebel Ali site also contains office buildings and a well-established residential area for staff and contractors, including both expatriates and UAE Nationals whose homes are in distant Emirates.
Our entire Jebel Ali site covers five square kilometres and is five times larger than Dubai Mall.
