Al Taweelah alumina refinery - currently one of the largest industrial construction sites in the United Arab Emirates - is located next to our Al Taweelah aluminium smelter in Abu Dhabi.
On completion, Al Taweelah alumina refinery will be the first alumina refinery in the UAE and the second in the Middle East.
The UAE currently depends on imports for all of its alumina needs. Alumina refineries process bauxite ore into alumina, which is the feedstock for aluminium smelters.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery will have a nameplate production capacity of 2 million tonnes of alumina per year and is expected to meet 40 per cent of our alumina requirements. This will help secure the UAE's supplies of this vital raw material for the aluminium industry.
We have already signed an agreement with Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée for the supply of bauxite from the Republic of Guinea. Once it is operating at full capacity, Al Taweelah alumina refinery will process approximately 5 million tonnes of Guinean bauxite per year into alumina.
Bauxite residue, a by-product of alumina refining, will be filtered, transported and safely dry-stored in a specially-prepared area 35 kilometres inland of the refinery.
Emirates Global Aluminium is already working hard on a range of potential uses and practical recycling solutions for this bauxite residue, with a dedicated expert team doing this work.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery is expected to contribute about AED 1 billion per year to the UAE economy, and create 600 permanent jobs once operational.
There is potential to expand further on the site adjacent to the Al Taweelah smelter.
